Yuan Shi Dian Hands-on Technique was researched and developed to relieve Symptoms and Signs. To achieve this goal, Hands-on Technique must be guided by diagnosis, coordinated with the application of Heat Sources to substantially enhance its safety and effectiveness. Yuan Shi Dian Hands-on Technique includes the location to Antui as well as Antui technique. Location is primary and technique secondary when treating disease and illness. To identify the location of Tishang of disease and illness, one can Antui the corresponding Yuan Shi Tong Dian. If there is improvement after Antui, the Symptom is caused by Remote Tishang. One should Antui the Yuan Shi Tong Dian and Wenfu the Yuan Shi Dian. If there is no immediate improvement after Antui, the Symptoms and Signs are caused by Affected Area Tishang. One should Antui the tender points of the Affected Area and Wenfu the Affected Area. Only through such diagnosis and treatment can the goal of resolving the Symptoms and Signs caused by either Remote or Affected Area Tishang be achieved.
In terms of location, Yuan Shi Dian can be divided into Yuan Shi Dian along the spine (neck, upper back, lower back, and sacral vertebrae) and the seven regions of the body (head, shoulder, elbow, dorsum of hand, hip, ankle and dorsum of foot). Each Yuan Shi Dian covers a specific area of the body, and together, they cover the entire body. When practicing, one merely needs to know the Yuan Shi Dian corresponding to the location where the disease/illness appears, then Antui the established Yuan Shi Dian to identify the tender point(s) that need(s) to be treated. The basic principles of finding the location of Yuan Shi Tong Dian along both sides of the spine are as follows:
Even though the name Yuan Shi Dian uses the word “Dian” (point), it actually connects into lines. Therefore, when Antui, there is no need to adhere strictly to the specific number of points. In clinical practice, any tender point identified in various locations could be a single point or multiple points, link to form a segment, or even cover the whole path. In addition, since Yuan Shi Tong Dian has different depths for different locations, the Hands-on Technique involves being clear about Antui locations combined with the Antui technique.
As far as Antui technique, Antui must be “An” (press) first and then “tui" (rub). Also, the pressure exerted on the tender points must be from light to heavy to determine the most appropriate pressure to apply. The principle is that it would be best if the patient could experience a slight feeling of pain. Excessive pressure may result in severe pain andcan easily cause harm, while pressure that is too gentle with no pain at all is ineffective. Antui for about three seconds for each tender point, and one can repeat two to three times. To avoid over-expending Heat Energy for the patient, cease Antui when the disease and illness have been alleviated, or the patient’s stamina has weakened. For people with severe disease and illness or severe Symptoms, Antui can be done twice a day; for people with mild Symptoms, Antui once every two days. However, there is no hard and fast rule. As required by the patient’s condition and under the circumstances that the patient can tolerate, the pressure, duration, and frequency of Antui can be exibly adjusted. For example, for people who feel pain even with light presses, one can rst apply External Heat Source to Wenfu, then Antui slowly and gently using the finger pulp or the heel of the palm. When the patient has adapted, use the elbow to Antui and moderately increase the pressure to reach from shallow to deep and achieve the goal of resolving the disease and illness. In this case, the time spent on treatment can be quite long. Whereas in emergency rescue, the Antui pressure must be increased; the Antui must reach the location precisely and instantaneously and to a deep level so that the Symptoms can be resolved quickly. In this case, the time spent on treatment will be quite short. In conclusion, with Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian or even the tender points of the Affected Area, the supreme principle is what is within the patient’s tolerance level, and that patient’s condition improves.
In terms of the technique to Antui Yuan Shi Tong Dian, to achieve precision, evenness, and dexterity, the Hands-on Technique involves the respective intensity, angle, speed, amplitude, and so forth in the use
of the elbow, fist, heel of palm, knuckle, and finger pulp. Besides, the body posture must be coordinated. In addition, the practitioner must be clear about the locations of Yuan Shi Dian. It is necessary to watch the instructional videos and repeatedly seek guidance and rectification from qualifed YSD volunteers to master this technique. However, the learning process is endless. Even an experienced practitioner must be proficient in theory and not become complacent, misleading others and oneself.
The Hands-on Technique Application:
1. When treating Symptoms and Signs in the head area and oral cavity: first Antui the Yuan Shi Tong Dian on both sides of the head. If there is no immediate improvement, only then can one Antui the tender points of Affected Area; that is, find the tender points in the areas covered by Yuan Shi Dian in the head and face to Antui.
2. When treating Symptoms and Signs on the neck and torso: first, Antui the Yuan Shi Tong Dian on the lower edge of the occipital bone and both sides of the spine. If there is no immediate improvement, only then can one Antui the tender points of the Affected Area; that is, find the tender points in the area covered by Yuan Shi Dian of the neck and the front and back of the body.
3. For Symptoms and Signs in the four limbs: for example, for knee swelling and pain, first Antui the Yuan Shi Tong Dian located on the ipsilateral hip (same side as the knee). If there is no immediate
improvement, only then can one Antui the tender points of the Affected Area; that is, find the tender points in the surrounding area covered by Yuan Shi Dian of the knee.
4. There are a very small number of patients for whom the tender points at the various depth of the Yuan Shi Dian location corresponding to the disease and illness cannot be found. In this case, one can go further to search up, down, left, and right of the Yuan Shi Dian location
The Hands-on Technique should adhere to the following three principles:
1. The Safety Principle: Antui pressure must be from light to heavy and within the patient’s tolerance level.
2. The Effectiveness Principle: Location must be precise, cease as soon as it is effective.
3. The Economic Principle: The practitioner uses the most effortless way, allowing the patient receiving the Antui to bear minimum pain while effectively resolving Symptoms.
