12. Yuan Shi Dian Medicine – Overview

1. Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) Medicine - Summary

Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) medicine started from zero, without any preconceived notions. It was drawn bit by bit and evolved from practical performance on patients. At the initial stage of research and development, the importance of Internal Heat Source was first established. Then, by finding the tender points to Antui, “Yuan Shi Dian along the Spine and Seven Regions of the Body” was concluded. Later, the significance of External Heat Source was discovered.

Further, YSD has established that for Symptoms and Signs, if Antui of the corresponding Yuan Shi Tong Dian is not immediately effective, one can Antui the tender points of the Affected Area. Also, the External and Internal Heat Sources of ginger soup, ginger powder, and ginger powder paste can be directly applied at the location of Tishang. In clinical practice, after continuous research and development, the following was concluded: by observing Symptoms and Signs, through the beneficial use of Contributing Factors favorable to medical treatment and health maintenance, one can deduce the Cause from the Effects and treat from the Cause to achieve the goals of safeguarding life and the healing of disease and illness. It can be seen that YSD is derived from the applications of Antui and Heat Sources. Its theory of Cause, Contributing Factors and Effect, and its diagnosis and treatment methods, are based on empirical evidence summarized and refined to establish a brand-new medical system that can accomplish what it says it will do.

“You reap what you sow.” All things in the universe are bound by the law of cause and effect. For example, seeds cannot grow into flowers and bear fruits without the aid of external conditions such as soil, sunlight, water, and air. In this analogy, the seed is the “Cause”; external conditions such as soil, sunlight, water, and air are “Contributing Factors”; the fruit that comes into being is the “Effect.” This is the commonly known principle of “Cause, Contributing Factors and Effect” ( 因 , 緣 , 果 ). To clarify the origin of disease and illness and the healing of Symptoms and Signs from disease and illness, the aforementioned theory of Cause, Contributing Factors and Effect can be applied. Cause, Contributing Factors, and Effect are basically hypothetical terms that must be used in conjunction with each other. So, for ease of expression, disease, illness, and senescence are first established as Effects; Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency are the Causes; factors beneficial or detrimental to the body are Contributing Factors. Thus they are established as counterparts to each other.

In the course of birth, aging, illness, and death, along with the influence of Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency, the body tends toward developing either disease and illness or senescence. From observation, disease and illness are manifested as Symptoms and Signs; senescence is exhibited in abnormal forms. From results detected by medical instruments, disease and illness are exhibited as tissue damage; senescence is exhibited as abnormalities. Disease, illness, and senescence are Effects and are caused by Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency.

Tishang is divided into Remote Tishang and Affected Area Tishang and can directly lead to Symptoms, Signs, and abnormalities. Heat Energy Deficiency can affect Tishang and from Tishang, leading to Symptoms, Signs, and abnormalities.

Contributing Factors can be divided into Contributing Factors favorable in medical treatment and health maintenance as well as Contributing Factors detrimental to health. Favorable Contributing Factors such as proper Antui, beneficial use of Heat Sources, appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and a good state of mind can ameliorate Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency, thus enabling the body to return to normal functioning and regain health. Detrimental Contributing Factors such as anger, stress, and fatigue will expend Heat Energy and aggravate Tishang, leading to Symptoms and Signs. However, some detrimental Contributing Factors such as car accidents, falls, and burns can directly create Tishang that leads to Symptoms and Signs.

Based on the above, for the Cause to affect the Effect, it must be aided by Contributing Factors. Similarly, for Contributing Factors to influence the Effect, it must be through the Cause. Neither the Cause nor Contributing Factors alone can affect the Effect; both the Cause and Contributing Factors must be present and sufficient to change the

Effect.

In diagnosis, do not treat Effects as the Cause such as treating Symptoms and Signs of heat phenomena (Effects) as the hot type of body constitution (Cause), thus causing confusion between Effects and the Cause. Also, do not misidentify Effects ( 錯認果 ). For example, senescence is an Effect, and disease and illness are also Effects; if aging and illness are not differentiated, and abnormalities from senescence are treated as disease and illness, the number of patients will increase for no reason. Do not invert Effects as Causes ( 倒果為因 ), that is, regard abnormalities and tissue damage (Effects) as the Causes of Symptoms and Signs, and assume that a single disease can have multiple Causes (一病多因 ), or an Effect can generate other Effects ( 果生果 ). Likewise, in diagnosis, do not ignore the Cause and only address Contributing Factors, that is, ignore the difference in body constitution (Cause) and instead assert that detrimental Contributing Factors such as bacteria and viruses can lead to disease and illness and that Contributing Factors can lead to Effects (緣生果). In treatment, do not ignore the Cause and address only Contributing Factors, that is, ignore the functioning of the body (Cause) and assert that Contributing Factors in medical treatment such as vaccines and Western medicine can prevent and heal disease and illness and that Contributing Factors can cure Effects ( 緣治果 ).

Where there is disease and illness, there will surely be Tishang. In order to self-repair Tishang, the body will expend even more Heat Energy. Therefore, in treating disease and illness, one should start with treating the Cause, utilizing various favorable Contributing Factors to simultaneously ameliorate Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. In addition, one must nurture “great compassion and great vows,” and at all times, maintain a reflective mindset, conduct introspections, and eliminate detrimental Contributing Factors. That is, modifying the Cause will lead to changes in Effects ( 因變果轉 ); therefore, it will not be difficult to treat disease and illness. However, if one only pursues Effects but neglects the Cause, the consequences would be unpredictable. It is only for the wise ones to make judicious decisions.

2. Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) Medicine is Compatible with the Wisdom and Essence of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Classical Western Medicine

The following sixteen Chinese characters from the book “Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor” (Huangdi Neijing 黃帝內經 ), written over 2,000 years ago, is most representative of the wisdom of classical traditional Chinese medicine (TCM):

“正氣存內,邪不可干” - “When the body is abound with vital Qi, it cannot be invaded by exogenous pathogens.”

“邪之所湊,其氣必虛” -“If pathogens invade and occupy the body, Qi-

deficiency is bound to ensue.”

When Heat Energy is sufficient, and tissues and organs are functioning smoothly with no Tishang, then the body is abound with vital Qi (正氣存內). That is, the body does not have the Cause of disease and illness. When the body is in such a state, even if pathogens (detrimental Contributing Factors) are present, they cannot invade the body(邪不可干)because the Cause is not present to collaborate with those Contributing Factors. Conversely, if pathogens are able to invade the human body and cause disease and illness, it must be due to Heat Energy Deficiency and the existence of Tishang.

In diagnosis and treatment, TCM emphasizes “syndrome differentiation treatment to consolidate the constitution and reinvigorate the body”(辨

證論治,固本培元). In other words, through analyzing the patient’s body constitution, along with the differentiation of the properties of medicine, TCM will apply the appropriate remedies to improve the body constitution and strengthen the vital Qi (body resistance) so as to restore the normal functioning of the body’s tissues and organs. In this way, the body can avoid the threat of disease and illness, and the goal of self-healing can be achieved.

Classical Western medicine is represented by Hippocrates (c.460- c.370 BC), an ancient Greek medical saint regarded as the “Father of Western Medicine.” Below are a few of his famous classical quotes:

1.      “Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.”

2.      “The natural healing force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well.”

3.      “It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.”

Thus Hippocrates’ core medical ideology was also based on the body’s natural healing power. It emphasized applying measures that could help the body’s natural self-healing and that “treating the person” was more important than “treating the disease.” This is compatible with the ideology of “people the foremost” and “treatment based on syndrome differentiation.” Therefore, from the perspective of ideological roots, both classical TCM and classical Western medicine seek from within and are centered on the body’s innate immunity and self-healing power.

YSD medicine approaches from the perspective of clinical practice. Through empirical evidence, it has been discovered that no single therapy or medicine can cure any disease or illness. All methods are merely helpful Contributing Factors. Ultimately, the solution lies from within, that is, the normal functioning of our body. Hence it must be through the effect of the body’s Heat Energy and the functioning of tissues and organs for Contributing Factors to ameliorate Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. This serves to enhance the body’s innate immunity and self-healing power in order to achieve the goals of disease and illness prevention and health improvement. This unique discovery coincides with the wisdom of classical TCM and classical Western medicine.

YSD medicine is particularly valuable in these two respects: 1) By finding the tender points from “the Spine and Seven Regions of the Body” to Antui, Remote Tishang can be resolved quickly to cause disease and illness to instantly disappear or become invisible; in the process of treatment, YSD can also distinguish the location of Tishang for pre-existing disease or pre-disease so diagnosis and treatment can be integrated as one and accomplished in a single step. 2) By observing whether there are Symptoms of poor stamina, the relative severity of the disease and illness can be differentiated from which the principle of treatment of Antui and Heat Sources can be determined. That is, for mild or severe Symptoms, Antui should be primary, supplemented by applying Heat Sources. Heat Sources should be primary for severe disease and illness, supplemented by Antui and other health maintenance methods. In this way, the patient’s condition can be targeted to ameliorate Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency so that if there is disease and illness, the patient can recover rapidly and turn from peril to safety. If there is no disease and illness, the body can be strengthened, longevity increased, and disease and illness prevented. As such, TCM’s health maintenance and cultivation concepts of “consolidate the constitution and reinvigorate the body”(固本培元) and “a top-notch doctor is able to treat disease before its onset”( 上工治未病 ) are no longer unattainable dreams.

Due to the breakthrough and innovation of Antui and the application of Heat Sources, YSD medicine was able to “dispel the clouds and see the sun” (shed light) and clearly understood that all Symptoms and Signs of disease and illness are caused by Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency. Thus in daily living, through the use of Contributing Factors favorable in medical treatment and health maintenance, numerous cases were produced. It has further proven that heat-related Symptoms and Signs do not indicate a hot type of body constitution. As such, YSD medicine was able to comprehensively simplify and enhance TCM’s meridian theory, the four diagnostic methods ( 四診心法 ) and “1st acupuncture, 2nd moxibustion, 3rd medication.” In their rebirth, YSD has formed a non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive health maintenance and medical treatment therapy that integrates diagnosis and treatment and is easier for public dissemination.

In summary, both classical TCM and classical Western medicine emphasize the natural vital Qi (inner positive energy) or self-healing power innate to our body. Suppose there was a lack of effective practical methods in the past, causing the medical profession to have gradually forgotten about this inward emphasis, and has turned outward to aggressively seek the results from medical instruments as well as the efficacy of medication and the curative effect of surgery, causing diagnosis and treatment to become even more complicated. If so, with the emergence of YSD’s method of integrated diagnosis and treatment as well as health maintenance and medical treatment, a simple yet effective practical method has finally been provided. It serves to enhance positive energy and stimulate the self-healing power to restore the body’s normal functionality. Hence if there is disease and illness, it enables quick healing and recovery. If there is no disease and illness, anti-aging, increasing longevity, and preventing disease and illness can be achieved. Therefore, YSD medicine truly embodies the essence of the wisdom of classical TCM and classical Western medicine. It is a bold exploration in the development of medicine in human history to reverse course from complexity to simplicity, to allow medicine to be propelled out of hospitals into homes and to be practiced in our daily lives.

3. Unique Characteristics of Western Medicine, Traditional

Chinese Medicine and Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) Medicine

The characteristics of Western medicine are to treat disease and illness from the Effects and target abnormalities and tissue damage detected from medical instruments as the primary objects of diagnosis and treatment. However, Western medicine treats disease and illness from the Effects and emphasizes medical treatment while it de-emphasizes health maintenance. It targets the Affected Area, and although this can change the functioning of tissues and organs to achieve the goal of treatment (quickly resolving abnormalities and Symptoms and Signs from disease and illness), the health maintenance effects (derived from treating the Cause which can improve the body constitution and achieve the self-healing of disease and illness, anti-aging, and increasing longevity) are being overlooked. Medical treatment separated from health maintenance cannot ameliorate Heat Energy Deficiency. Therefore, although Symptoms and Signs can be temporarily suppressed by Western medicine, it is difficult to heal the disease and illness. Also, treating from the Effects at the Affected Area cannot provide due care for what is “Remote.” So even though surgery can, of course, help heal disease and illness caused by Affected Area Tishang, it may not necessarily resolve Symptoms caused by Remote Tishang. Further, as surgery and Western medicine will severely damage the body and deplete its Heat Energy, for patients with severe disease and illness, not only would healing be difficult, their lives could be endangered. In summary, it can be seen that treating from the Effects does more harm than good and is not the best treatment method.

In terms of diagnosis and treatment, Western medicine emphasizes instruments and de-emphasizes Symptoms and Signs, thus leading to results detected from medical instruments often being at odds with the true condition of the body. That is, the body has Symptoms and Signs; however, the test results are normal, whereas when the body has no Symptoms and Signs, test results show abnormalities. Further, there are often contradictions in the medical treatment of disease and illness. That is, the body has Symptoms and Signs and examinations detect abnormalities; these abnormalities are often considered as the Causes of disease and illness and require treatment. However, abnormalities are caused by Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency; they are Effects and not Causes. So, although abnormalities can be brought back to normal through medications and surgery, the Symptoms and Signs may not necessarily improve. Or the body does not have Symptoms and Signs, but results from examinations detect abnormalities. These abnormalities are often considered as the disease and illness themselves and require treatment. But this view is inconsistent with the purpose of medicine. Because abnormalities are neither Symptoms nor Signs, therefore, they belong to aging, not illness. Treating abnormalities is not within the scope of treating disease and illness. In the final analysis, the reason for this inconsistency and contradiction with the facts is that abnormalities detected by medical instruments are not the Causes of disease and illness or the disease and illness per se.

The characteristics of TCM and YSD medicine are to treat disease and illness from the Cause and target Symptoms and Signs as objects of diagnosis and treatment. In diagnosis, TCM is by observing Symptoms and Signs, and in its external treatment, administers acupuncture and moxibustion by determining the acupuncture points based on the meridian theory. In its internal treatment, TCM uses the four diagnostic methods to differentiate the body constitution and prescribe Chinese herbal medicine. Thus TCM has developed two completely different diagnosis and treatment systems for external and internal treatment. By observing Symptoms and Signs, YSD infers the relative severity of the disease and illness and the location of Tishang to determine the principle of treatment of Antui and Heat Sources. Hence it can do what it stated, and a simple but effective method of combining diagnosis and treatment is formed.

In terms of treatment, TCM is administered through “1st acupuncture, 2nd moxibustion, 3rd medication,” whereas YSD uses both Antui and Heat Sources. Separately speaking, through Antui of the tender points at the Yuan Shi Dian locations, not only can Remote Tishang be quickly resolved and disease and illness made to instantly disappear or become invisible, but Antui can also be used to identify the location of Tishang of pre-existing disease and illness or pre-disease. Further, depending on the patient’s condition, one can also Antui the tender points of the Affected Area and apply the Heat Sources of ginger powder, ginger powder paste, or ginger soup externally to a large area of the body. These Heat Sources can also be used internally via enema, nasal spray, eyewash, etc., to enable them to go straight to the location of Tishang and warm the tissues and organs directly. Therefore, by combining the use of Antui and Heat Sources, coordinated with other health maintenance measures, the amelioration of Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency can be enhanced. Hence if there is no disease and illness, anti-aging, increasing longevity, and prevention of disease and illness can be achieved. If there is disease and illness, the patient can recover quickly and turn from peril to safety.

This is different from TCM’s acupuncture which can only resolve Symptoms. It is also different from TCM’s External Heat Source of moxibustion. Although moxibustion can be applied at the location of Tishang, it can only be applied to a small area and for a short duration; thus, the curative effect is limited and difficult to exert. YSD is also different from Chinese herbal medicine (Internal Heat Source). Although Chinese herbal medicine can improve the body’s constitution, it cannot directly reach Affected Area Tishang. Therefore, the curative effect is slow, and it is difficult when responding to emergency situations.

Since the diagnosis and treatment of YSD medicine are integrated as one, medical treatment and health maintenance supplement and complement each other, external and internal treatments are coordinated, and Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency can be treated simultaneously. Further, safeguarding life is first and foremost; resolving Symptoms and Signs is secondary. Thus safety and effectiveness can be significantly enhanced. In addition, since YSD medicine is derived from applying Antui and Heat Sources, its theory of Cause, Contributing Factors and Effect, and diagnosis and treatment methods are based on empirical evidence, which was summarized and refined. An all-out effort to ensure the theory’s consistency with clinical practice is strived for. That is, what is stated must be achievable so that it can be consistent and not self-contradictory. Thus theory and clinical practice, diagnosis and treatment along with medical treatment and health maintenance have achieved a high degree of unity.

In short, YSD medicine is a safe, effective, simple, environmentally friendly, non-pharmaceutical, and non-invasive life-oriented medicine. It integrates diagnosis and treatment. At heart, it calls for great compassion toward all beings. It returns to simplicity and nature, departs from appearance, and explores the origin. It transforms complexity into simplicity, is easy to learn, use, and disseminate. Not only does it allow the general public to quickly take charge of their own health, but it can also significantly lower medical expenses, conserve resources, and reduce environmental pollution, leaving future generations a pristine land and a path for living and survival.

4. Goal, Purpose, and Positioning of Yuan Shi Dian (YSD) Medicine

By observing Symptoms and Signs, TCM uses the meridian theory and the four diagnostic methods to determine the treatment principle of “1st acupuncture, 2nd moxibustion, 3rd medication”. However, if its diagnosis and treatment methods are not comprehensively simplified and modified, when faced with patients with critical and severe disease and illness, they are inevitably in dire straits, and the consequences are worrisome. Western medicine uses the results detected by medical instruments as the target of diagnosis and treatment. In theory, it commits the fallacies of inverting Effects as Causes and not differentiating between aging and illness. In clinical practice, surgery and Western medicine not only cannot completely heal disease and illness, for patients with poor stamina, but it could even endanger their lives. Under these circumstances, the solution can only be found by tracing back to the origin.

YSD medicine started from zero, without any preconceived notions. It was drawn bit by bit and evolved from practical performance on patients. First, it was by locating the tender points to Antui that “Yuan Shi Dian along the Spine and Seven Regions of the Body” was concluded, then various External and Internal heat Sources and other health maintenance measures were developed. Based on the empirical evidence of Antui and Heat Sources, a simple yet effective method of integrating diagnosis and treatment was summarized. To clarify the origin of disease and illness, the theory of Cause, Contributing Factors and Effect was used. Hence all kinds of intractable disease and illness can be healed. For medical theories, YSD also helps to distinguish right from wrong. This facilitates the general public to deal with complexity in a simple way, benefiting themselves and helping others.

Meanwhile, by targeting cases of failure with in-depth analysis, a breakthrough of the bottlenecks of medicine was achieved: It is the understanding that External and Internal Heat Sources of ginger powder, ginger powder paste, or ginger powder soup can directly reach the location of Tishang; in addition, if Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian does not have immediate efficacy, one can Antui the tender points of the Affected Area. This serves to enhance -- at specific areas -- the amelioration of Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency from which the goals of YSD medicine can be achieved: if there is disease and illness, quickly heal disease and illness and enable the patient to turn from peril to safety; if there is no disease and illness, counteract aging, increase longevity, and prevent disease and illness. Obviously, this kind of nonpharmaceutical, non-invasive life-oriented medicine is the best solution to resolve the issues of birth, aging, illness, and death.

Only with a healthy body can we continue to live life with quality. It is because any remedy, be it for medical treatment or health maintenance, cannot by itself cure disease and illness but merely acts as a favorable Contributing Factor. Through the effect of the body’s Heat Energy and the functioning of tissues and organs, Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency can be ameliorated, and our innate immunity and selfhealing power (as embodied by our stamina) enhanced to restore the body to normal functioning and regain health.

Hence health primarily comes from the body’s stamina. Stamina comes from nature’s simple way of life and not artificially complicated treatment methods. As such, instead of teaching people to rely on vaccines, Western medicine, or even surgery, why not teach them how to live a healthy life? Therefore, the purpose of YSD medicine is to apply medical treatment and health maintenance Contributing Factors and avoid detrimental Contributing Factors in our everyday life. That is, use Antui, Heat Sources, appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and maintain a good state of mind in our everyday life. In addition, we must also consume less of the following: foods that are sweet or sour, alcohol, ice treats, seafood and fruits and vegetables that are cold and raw. For people with weak stamina, vaccinations should be avoided, and when we are sick, we cannot blindly rely on surgery, injections, and oral medications. Otherwise, we will go beyond our capacity, interfere with the natural forces within our body and let our body be damaged easily. The loss will outweigh the gain. This is the way to reap the benefit and avoid harm. We can improve the functioning of our tissues and organs and ameliorate Heat Energy Deficiency to enhance the body’s innate immunity and self-healing power from which, if there is disease and illness, accelerate the healing of disease and illness. And if there is no disease and illness, strengthen our body and increase longevity. Without a doubt, this kind of life-oriented medicine, which upholds nature, respects life, and safeguards the body is consistent with the essence of the wisdom of classical Chinese and classical Western medicine and is also the essential path for medical treatment and health maintenance.

The practice of medicine must include both diagnosis and treatment. Treatment includes medical treatment and health maintenance. By observing Symptoms and Signs, YSD infers the relative severity of the disease and illness and the location of Tishang to determine the principle of treatment of Antui and Heat Sources; and in our everyday life, coordinate with appropriate exercise, adequate rest, and a good state of mind. In this way, Tishang and Heat Energy Deficiency can be ameliorated and the body’s innate immunity and self-healing power enhanced. This serves to safeguard life and heal disease and illness, counter aging, increase life span, and prevent disease and illness. Observing Symptoms and Signs is classified as diagnosis;

Antui is classified as medical treatment, and the rest of the treatment methods are classified as health maintenance. It is worth mentioning that through the medical treatment of Antui of Yuan Shi Tong Dian, YSD can treat pre-existing disease and illness or pre-disease; also, the location of Tishang of pre-existing disease and illness or pre-disease can be distinguished. It can be seen that YSD possesses the essence and full spectrum of medical treatment and health maintenance. It also allows diagnosis and treatment to be integrated as one and accomplished in a single step. From this perspective, YSD is well-deserved to be called medicine.

In addition, YSD is treating disease and illness from the Cause by activating the body’s self-healing through non-invasive Antui and nonpharmaceutical application of External and Internal Heat Sources. This is completely different from Western medicine’s way of treating disease and illness from the Effects through injections, surgery, and medications. This new discipline can be assimilated into our daily life without medical behavior but fully possesses the substance of medicine. In the end, shall it be classified as Western medicine, TCM, or as a new school of medicine other than the two? Even though the answer can be seen clearly, in order to avoid unnecessary arguments, we shall leave it to the people to form their own opinions and take what they need. Let the public be the judge, and only time will tell.
